The 7th Biennial Warren County Poetry Festival is a free event to be held on September 24, 2011.

The theme of this year's festival is "Mapping the Landscape of Love and Loss in Poetry."

The Warren County Poetry Festival has won two Citation of Excellence from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The Festival will feature workshops, panel discussions, book signings, and open mic sessions.

Featured poets include: Toi Derricotte, Mark Doty, Marie Howe, Jim Haba, Sander Zulauf, Martin Farawell, Stanley Barkan, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Lyn Lifshin, Joe Weil, and Laura Boss, Artistic Director.

This 7th Biennial Warren County Poetry Festival is made possible by a grant from the by the NJ State Council on the Arts and the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this Poetry Festival do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities..

The festival is held on the campus of the Blair Academy, in Blairstown, NJ.

Bimbo’s Devotion

            for Larry

 

Those dogs will save you a piece of work.

The farmer, see, would have to walk

all over hell and gone collecting those cows

and they’re some mean if they don’t want to move—

whereas the dog will run right up,

look them in the eye and nip their heels

to make them go the way he wants them—

they pay more heed to a good dog any day.

Take no time to train, got it in their blood—

you just show them what to do a couple times,

teach a few commands like round ‘em up

and take ‘em home—they have the instinct.

Bimbo my father’s dog to give you one example,

she was some smart, part collie other things mixed in,

Dad didn’t have to say a word—

come suppertime she’d go out on her own

and bring the whole herd home,

every last one regardless where they strayed.

Dad was crazy proud and took her everyplace,

if he got in the truck she jumped right up in back.

Well one day he just drove off without her—

she watched the truck pull down the drive,  

then got to work, killed all the chickens in the yard.

Stay on the Path, Mimi

 

On this brilliant October afternoon,

four-year-old Leah and I

take up our branch walking sticks again

and start our trek around the small lake,

the man-made fountain rippling water in circles,

forcing squawking wild ducks to the reeds,

and the ground is covered with bright leaves,

which Leah stoops to examine,

then hands me a perfect red maple one,

and soon I’m carrying a pile of leaves,

three feathers, and my pocket jiggles

with small stones, but toadstools Leah pokes

with her stick, Don’t touch, she says, they’re poison,

and as we turn the next bend deep in the woods,

something crackles the underbrush, and Leah says,

There are snakes, Mimi, so stay on the path,

and she tugs on my hand, but a hundred feet ahead,

says, I’m tired, and I’m thinking how can I carry

this forty-pound child, if she can’t make it?

so I ask, Can you still walk? and Leah says,

Yes, I just stay on the path, and I think how I

never followed the route laid out for me, rather

took shortcuts, diversions, for better or worse,

but as my granddaughter scampers ahead,

full of herself, the day, and the woods,

I don’t want to be anywhere else

except on the path that has brought us both here.  

 

Call for Artists -- Humor in Art, Watchung Arts Center, Deadline: Aug.15, 2011

Call for Artists – Humor in Art     Curator: Jim Fuess www.jimfuessart.com who is a member of the www.newartgroup.com who curate shows at the Watchung Arts Center www.watchungarts.org . Venue: The Watchung Arts Center is a multi use arts facility with an upper and lower art gallery. We also present quality works in fine arts, exciting music, and comedy show events as well as classes in drawing, photography, and yoga. This means that a large number of people see the art shows. The basics: All works must be hand delivered. The work must hang on the wall. No work larger than 36 inches in any dimension. The works are NOT insured. No nudity. 30% commission. We will ask each accepted artist who is included in the show to donate a hanging fee of $35.00 to the Arts Center to cover expenses. The Gallery: The upper gallery where this show will be held is 30x40 feet with 12 foot ceilings, track lighting, and a Walker hanging system. Your show will open at the same time as that of the lower gallery. Curator Statement: I am looking for art that is humorous. That being said I am not looking for a one joke piece. I am looking for images and ideas that will linger with the viewer. Weird, strange and bizarre are welcome. The gallery is 30x40. I will choose at least 8 artists. I prefer a series of works or a narrative rather than disconnected pieces. If your layout or hanging is complicated I may ask you to hang your work. The presentation doesn’t have to be linear. The work can be eight feet up or a foot off the floor. Send a series of works that will loosely fit a 15-20 foot wall space, at a low resolution to [email protected] . You may add any statement or explanation you want to. As with most curated shows the work that is sent in sometimes determines what the show looks like. So everything above may change. I expect a lot of rabbits. I hope to have a fun and disturbing show. Thanks.
