Lovers
He got up from the bed and
pulled on his jeans.
He didn’t bother with his underpants
“Sorry,” he said.
“That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
She folded the sheet above her breasts
and let her head fall deeper into the pillow.
“Well,” she said,
“its never gone that way with me.”
Her voice was resigned and annoyed.
“Never,” she said. “Not once.”
He buttoned his shirt and looked for his shoes.
He tried not to look anxious.
“It’ll be better next time,” he said.
“I promise.”
This was a lie but he thought he should say something.
“Okay,” she said.
She was puzzled and bored.
“I’ll be going,” he said.
“Dinner on Friday, right?”
He took his keys from his pocket and
twirled them around his finger.
“Sure,” she said.
“See you then.”
She smelled of sweat and fresh antiperspirant
“Right,” he said, “Bye.”
He left and closed the door.
He jiggled the handle to make sure the lock caught
It was cold.
He covered his mouth and blew onto his hands.
He met her a little over a month ago and
began sleeping with her soon after
He wasn’t sure if he liked her but
she seemed to like him and
her beauty couldn’t be overlooked
He started his car and watched the puffs of his breath
fog the rear view mirror.
Leaving the engine on,
he went back outside and
scraped the ice off the windshield
It’s going to be cold at least through Tuesday,
he thought.
That’s what he’d heard, anyway.
He might have been wrong
but he was pretty sure.
