The Beacon Sloop Club holds several festivals each year to raise funds for the clubs activities and bring awareness to many environmental and social issues. The Beacon Sloop Club's pride & joy is the "WOODY GUTHRIE", a wooden replica of a Hudson River Ferry Sloop. These boats, styled after Dutch designs, plied the Hudson throughout the 18th & 19th centuries. w/ Pete Seeger and other performers. Lot’s of good food and fresh sweet corn!

Jazz Guitar Workshops at the Barron Arts Center

Learn the art of jazz guitar improvisation

 Jazz Guitarist Andy Rothstein will share his knowledge of improvisational jazz-fusion for the guitar by conducting a workshop – “Hands-on Jazz Guitar Workshop” in February 2011 at the Barron Arts Center, located at 582 Rahway Avenue, Woodbridge, NJ. This workshop will teach the art of jazz guitar improvisation by providing participants with a foundation in theory, technique, and hands-on application using jazz standards.

 

The workshop will be held on Saturday afternoons, February 5-26, 2011, from 1:30-2:30 pm and will consist of 4 one-hour sessions, broken down into approximately 50% lecture and 50% hands-on guided practice.  The cost for the workshop is $130, with a $10 discount offered if you sign up before January 21, 2010. Class space is limited to 10 enrollments and will be accepted on a first-come basis. Checks can be made payable and sent to: Andy Rothstein, P.O. Box 343, Woodbridge, NJ, 07095.

This workshop is intended for musicians of high school age and beyond who know the basics of how to play the guitar, and would like to expand their knowledge by studying the idiom of Jazz. It is not an introduction to the guitar, so a pre-requisite is that participants will need to know the basics of how to play the guitar.

 About Andy Rothstein

Andy Rothstein has played guitar since the age of 13, and studied with such jazz greats as Steve Khan, Kevin Eubanks, Vinnie Zummo and Ted Dunbar. His unique style of contemporary jazz guitar fuses the modern jazz qualities of Chris Standring, with the blues stylings of Stevie Ray and atmospheric chords of Andy Summers, while still respecting the traditional approach of bebop players like Pat Martino. His latest CD release “Wit of the Staircase” has garnered much praise from critics and music aficionados alike. He is a member of the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation, NJ Jazz Society and has played numerous venues and festivals, including the Red, White & Blues: Jazz and Blues from the Garden State concert series this past July.
